COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR

Job Summary: This position reports directly to the Organizing Director.  The Community Development Coordinator performs a variety of tasks related to planning and implementing BHNC’s Community Development work including but not limited to Community Convener, BHNC’s Congress, Tenant Organizing the Public Housing in Bernal Heights and all of BHNC’s properties, Coalition building, and tracking the progress of various advocacy efforts in which BHNC is involved. This position requires working internally with program staff and externally with community groups, members, and stakeholders  

The Organization: Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center (BHNC) is a non-profit community based multi-service agency founded in 1978.  Our mission is to preserve and enhance the ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity of Bernal Heights and surrounding neighborhoods.  We promote community action to build a just and equitable community for all. BHNC focuses on the needs of people with low and moderate incomes. We work to accomplish our mission by:  

·        Developing affordable housing throughout San Francisco ;  

·        Providing linguistically and culturally responsive services to our community’s most vulnerable adults, seniors, youth, and their families;  

  • Developing leaders; organizing and empowering our tenants, clients, members, and allies to advocate for their needs and for the needs of the community.”   

BHNC has four key strategies to meet this mission: Affordable Housing Development, Senior Services, Youth Services, and Community Organizing  

Primary Responsibilities:  

·         Provide support to neighborhood groups, residents of public housing and BHNC-owned housing, including one-on-one meetings to assess skills and interests as well as coordinating and conducting meetings  

·         Coordinate and implement outreach strategies to BHNC’s affordable housing sites  

·         Work with BHNC staff, community groups, and individuals to plan and implement BHNC’s annual events including but not limited to BHNC Community Congress.  

·         Develop and coordinate strategies to engage members in various BHNC issues and events.  

·         Recruit members and assist staff to devise and implement their recruitment strategies for successful membership recruitments to meet our membership goal of 1,200 .  

·         Outreach to neighborhood groups and individuals around BHNC’s membership drive, and other activities. Lead team to plan, implement and manage Fiesta volunteers.  

·         Coordinate Community Convener Activities  

·         Assist in coordination of delivery of outreach materials such as NBJ to Cortland and

Mission Street businesses 

·        Participate in meetings as BHNC’s representative  

Knowledge/Skills required by the job:  

§         Must have a minimum of three years experience in community development work with mixed class, multi-racial, multi-ethnic communities including public housing and affordable housing communities.  

§         Commitment to social action, social justice and development of people into leaders  

§         Ability to interact with person of various social, cultural and economic and educational backgrounds   

§         Skill in negotiating, exchanging ideas, opinion and information with others and work as a member of a team  

§         Able to prioritize tasks in a fast paced and independent environment  

§         Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.  

§         Strong organizational skills with attention to details and follow through and ability to handle multiple priorities.  

§         Comfort using computers as a tool for communication and proficiency with word-processing, Excel, Interent and email required  

§         Bilingual Spanish preferred
